Editor David A. Goodman and James Kirk himself brings us the tale of Starfleet's greatest captain. The book beings with Captain Kirk remembering how his love for Edith Keeler and her death had effected him to the day that he was born in 2233 to George and Winona Kirk in Idaho on Earth. Both his parents had been starfleet officers and both knew Robert April who would go on to command the Enterprise from the time that she was launched to the end of her first five year mission. While the Enterprise was out exploring the final frontier, young Jim Kirk joined Starfleet Academy and passed the no win simulator by the skin of his teeth and was assigned to the the starship Republic, where he would but Ben Finny up for report for leaving a panel open on the ships fusion drive. He would then be transferred along with the Republic's captain to one of the Constitution-class starships where he would hesitate in firing the ships main phaser bank at a cloud creature that killed most of that ships crew. Later on he would take command of the Enterprise for her historic five year mission that began with seeing his friend Gary Mitchel be killed by his own hands after trying to break through the galactic barrier. Later he would accept a promotion to Admiral and oversee the refit of the Enterprise with Will Decker as her Captain but he would soon take that away from him because he wanted to leave the Admiralty and command a starship once again. After fighting off Khan for a second time and returning his first officer Captain Spock to life and saving Earth from the whale probe he would be given command of the Enterprise-A. Years later after Sulu had taken command of his own ship Kirk would be instrumental making peace with the Klingons a species that up until the events that would lead to his retirement from Starfleet he would never for give them for the death of his son David., This is a great book and one not to be missed by Star Trek and science fiction fans. I highly recommend it.
