Six months after the events of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Doctor Chapel being asked to help the Trill Ambassador Dax on a shuttle trip to a Trill ship that will be able to deal with their special needs. Through out this adventure we see that Spock is still thinking about his dealings with V'Ger and weather or not he wants to stay aboard the Enterprise. But when it comes to Doctor Chapel she finds out about the Trill special needs and vows to keep silent as well as makes a choice that will lead her to the position that we see her in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This story also would fit well into the anthology the Lives of Dax and I do recommend it for every Star Trek fan.
